Abstract:
The Ophidiiformes order is a group of marine, estuarine, and freshwater fish. Typically they have 0-2 rays, usually very close together, on the pelvic fin located below the anterior part of the head, at the operculum, or in front of it; long dorsal and anal fins, extending to
and usually joined to the caudal fin; and fins with soft rays (Nelson 1994, Nielsen et al. 1999). They can inhabit waters of up to 8360 meters of depth, and they can be
found in all oceans, especially in the Tropics. Information about larval and juvenile development is available only for a few species. Fish in this order are of little commercial
value, and at the moment only a few species are on the UICN red list in the categories of Vulnerable (VU) and Data Deficient (DD).
