Abstract:
The Mexican tetra (Astyanax mexicanus) is native to the Rio Grande and Nueces River drainages in South Texas. This species is widespread in spring fed rivers and streams in central Texas, likely as the result of “bait bucket” introductions beginning in the middle of the last century. Although Texas populations are derived from surface stock, this species occurs in several cave and spring systems. The Texas Tetra Project seeks to explore the evolutionary history of this species in Texas. Ongoing efforts include documentation of subterranean populations and comparison of morphology, physiology, and behavior among cave and surface populations.
