Abstract:
ABSTRACT Earthworm gobies of the genus Luciogobius, collected from Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, are preliminary reviewed. The genus Inu, previously synonymized with Luciogobius, is regarded here as valid. Following nine species of Luciogobius, as well as 16 undescribed species, are recognized in this region: L. elongatus, L. fluvialis, L. fonticola, L. grandis, L. guttatus, L. martellii, L. pallidus, L. parvulus, and L. platycephalus. Twelve of all 16 undescribed species are herein reported first time to science, whereas remaining four have been reported as undescribed species elsewhere in previous literatures in Japanese. Some of these undescribed species are hitherto known only from extremely restricted areas in Shizuoka Prefecture, and are possibly endangered already. Towards our better understanding of species diversity of these interstice-dwelling gobies for conservation perspectives, respective new Japanese names are proposed for 10 species based on examined specimens before the formal descriptions.
