Abstract:
As this book went into print there were over 250 species of subterranean fishes, with an additional 80 species showing eyelessness and depigmentation (troglomorphisms), as a result of living in lightless, though not subterranean, habitats. Very few of these species have been studied in detail and only one species, Astyanax jordani, has attracted very intense study (currently over 700 published works), as a result of its interfertility with its sister species, the surface-living Astyanax mexicanus. The Astyanax model will probably remain the most studied species but the genus Sinocyclocheilus, which is restricted to China, will probably become the next model species in which to study the evolution of troglomorphisms. The reason for studying troglomorphisms is that evolution takes place in many different caves which are isolated from each other and therefore there are multiple independent ‘experiments’ which all arrive at the same conclusion. This makes the conclusions drawn from these studies very broadly supported. The genus Sinocyclocheilus contains 73 species occurring over a large geographic area and encompassing a large number of caves. This is in contrast to Astyanax jordani which is known from only 30 caves in a relatively small region of Mexico. These 73 Sinocyclocheilus species are members of four clades, i.e. jii, angularis, cyphotergous and tingi. Furthermore, it is highly likely that these clades are considerably independent of one another so making a second level in the hierarchy of independent experiments in evolution. The present book is a significantly updated English translation of Zhao and Zhang (2009) and it will be essential reading for anyone interested in subterranean biology. It will be of especial importance to future generations of workers on the genus Sinocyclocheilus as the standard description of the biodiversity and morphology of the genus.
