Abstract:
The endangered Alabama cave shrimp Palaemonias alabamae lives in two known cave systems in Madison County Alabama; Bobcat Cave is one of these cave systems. During July 1996, approximately 20 individuals were observed in the cave. The shrimp is environmentally sensitive and has not been seen in the type locality, Shelta Cave, since the early 1970’s. A Lotka-Volterra (LV) model of the Bobcat Cave ecosystem is proposed and methods for determining the interaction coefficients in the model presented. While the LV model has several shortcomings, a more sophisticated model cannot be justified because of the lack of data. This model is based on available information on the shrimp, and its predators, the southern cave fish Typhlicthys subterraneus, and cave crayfish (in Bobcat Cave Aviticambarus jonesi).
