Abstract:
Astyanax cavefish demonstrate at least three forms of significant cranial variation. Cranial “bending” which appears to occur most often towards the left, involves the entire anteriorto- posterior aspect of the head. Facial bone fragmentation, which principally impacts the largest bone of the orbital skeleton, occurs through a mysterious form of remodeling. Finally, dermal bone fusions, occurring frequently across the facial skeleton, seem to impact a variety of bones – with two particular bones remaining exclusively unaffected. Here, we review the nature of these enigmatic features which, with the exception of bending, seem to occur randomly across the lateral axis. We provide potential explanations for these traits, which we feel are likely rooted in complex behavioral adaptations and developmental interactions with sensory adaptation. Future studies will seek to clarify the precise genetic basis for these unusual features and inform the adaptive relevance of this profound cranial variation.
