Emerging model organisms
Abstract:
Adaptation to subterranean environments comes with striking changes to organismal behavior and metabolism. One clear example is how multiple obligate cave dwellers have adapted distinct shifts in locomotion, often abandoning sporadic, energetically costly movement and instead adapting slow, energetically favorable movement. With such contrasting behavior relative to their terrestrial counterpart, researchers have sought to characterize these changes in detail. However, technical challenges arise among nonspecialists, such as proper tracking software use and the ability/know-how to incorporate said software to meet the user’s needs. To bridge this gap in expertise, we provide a step-by-step protocol to automate fish tracking, suitable for novice and experts alike. Additionally, we detail a manual approach to quantify maximal swimming velocity within swimming “bursts,” an often-challenging task within traditional tracking software.
