Abstract:
Organs such as the heart, liver and pancreas exhibit asymmetry across the left-right axis in most vertebrates. The correct establishment of left-right asymmetry is essential for the correct arrangement and function of organs. In this study, the effect of increased temperatures during the early stages of embryonic development on morphology and left-right asymmetry was examined in three variants of the species Astyanax mexicanus: the Chica cavefish, Pachón cavefish and surface fish. The morphology and left-right asymmetry of larvae were analyzed through staining and using a dissecting and fluorescence microscope at five days post fertilization. Results showed that Chica cavefish have the greatest temperature tolerance followed by Pachón cavefish and surface fish, respectively. This study also suggests that incubation at higher temperatures, particularly during gastrulation, result in higher rates of deaths, malformations and left-right reversals of organs. This indicates that critical processes, among which help establish correct left-right asymmetry, occur during gastrulation. These findings provide important insights into the mechanisms involved in establishing left-right asymmetry and may ultimately help us to better understand and treat diseases arising from LR defects.
