A human fish in the stomach of a trout in Dretulja
Abstract:
In Dretulja, brook and large rainbow trout, often weighing several kilograms, are hunted, which find shelter in the inaccessible undercut and densely overgrown coast. Unlike the large sinkholes of the Jesenice River, the Dretulja gradually disappears into several small holes near the village of Janje Gora. Stajnička Jaruga is also an interesting larger stream that gets its water from the sinkhole, but further west from the south side of the Chapel. It was also home to the rare endemic lamprey (Leuciscus polylepis or the old name Telestes polylepis), which spends part of the year during the dry season in the abyss, where the main rarity of the Dinaric karst, the manfish (Proteus anguinus), also lives. A few years ago, in the gut of a larger trout, which I caught in a lake in the Jezeran area, to my surprise I found this interesting and strange endemic fish swallowed. The entire area of the Velebit and Dinaric karsts, together with the water basin of the Herzegovina rivers, is characterized by a special group of endemic fish from the genus phoxinellus and leuciscus, which most often live together with trout, and for a part of the year in the dry period they stay in underground waters.
